Gothic; Grisaille Window with Martyrdom of LawrenceDelaporte no. 47, Deremble-Manhes no. 25APanel 1: Martyrdom of LawrenceLawrence (haloed, bearded, and nude) is tied to the triangular grill with a fire below it . Below, two men use bellows to encourage the flames. Standing behind the grill at left is a crowned figure carrying a sword whom Delaporte identifies as Dacien. The center a man tortures Lawrence with a fork-like instrument. At right stands a man holding a small jar containing small round objects, which he strews on Lawrence's body. Delaporte says that this is salt being rubbed in his wounds.Compare with the same scene in the St. Lawrence Window in the south nave clerestory (Delaporte no. 171, Deremble-Manhes no. 139b) See also the martyrdom of St Foi.; Grisaille Window MODERN
