Description
Gothic; The Mary Magdalen WindowDelaporte no. 5, Deremble-Manhes no. 46Panels 6 and 7. Funeral of LazarusDelaporte suggests that these two panels taken together show the funeral of Lazarus. In panel 6, Mary Magdalen (haloed) stands at the extreme left- she dries her tears with her mantle. Next to her is a bearded man in a pointed “Jew’s cap” he turns his head to look at Mary. Martha (no halo) stands at the extreme right of this panel- she raises her hands to her face. Beside he stands a man in a hooded garment. Mary Magdalen and Martha are identified by and inscription at the bottom of the panel. S[AN]C[T]A MARIA MAGDALENA S[AN]C[T]A MARTHAThe adjacent panel (7) shows the funeral service. The shrouded body of Lazarus lies in a coffin which is parallel to the plane of the panel. At left behind the coffin are three grieving figures (two men and a woman?) To the right stands a bishop wearing a camelaucum – the white cone-shaped precursor of the mitre. The bishop (Maximin?) appears to be sprinkling the body with water from a rod with a cloth on the end- this is the moment of aspersion during the funeral service. To the extreme right is a tonsured cleric holding an open book in front of him so that the bishop can read it- he holds the bishop’s crosier. (Compare with the funeral of St Sylvester- Sylvester window- panel 31) The bishop and cleric are anachronistic. The source of this story is John 11:1-46.; The St. Mary Magdalen Window
